How to Use SIY Patterns When the Designer Hasn’t Taken Your Measurements

The first thing you need to know is that you should have some basic knowledge of sewing and measurements. Patterns are designed based on global standard size charts. However, there may be multiple size charts, but they are all quite similar and follow standard measurements.

To choose the right pattern size, you must check the provided size chart because, for example, one designer’s medium size may differ from another’s. Now, you need a reference point for selecting your size since your body measurements may not perfectly match the chart. I recommend choosing based on your bust measurement, as long as your bust is proportionate to the rest of your body.

Once you have taken your bust measurement, check the size chart in the pattern’s description and find the corresponding size. If your exact bust measurement is not listed, choose the next larger size. For example, if your bust is 83 cm, and the chart provides sizes for 80 cm and 85 cm, you should select 85 cm.

After determining your size, purchase the PDF pattern, print it, and compare the rest of the measurements with your body. If there are differences, simply adjust the pattern accordingly. For instance, if your shoulder width is 10 cm, but the pattern’s shoulder width is 12 cm, you can reduce 2 cm from the armhole area.
